Tour Description

Discover more about this tour

This 5.5 hour private tour explores the origins of the Impressionist movement. Start at the Orsay Museum where you will skip the line and enter directly into its main collection of artwork by the likes of Monet and Cezanne. Then head to the Montmartre neighborhood and experience the environment that served as a backdrop to these artists’ lives. The tour can welcome up to 6 guests and includes transportation between the two locations.

Begin at the Orsay Museum, where our charming young guides will lead you through the repurposed, century-old train station that today showcases explore the artistic evolutions that led to the Impressionists.

From Manet’s scandalous “Luncheon on the Grass” to Renoir’s “Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette,” our engaging guides will discuss the Impressionists and their innovative techniques. Explore those who came right before them like Millet and “The Gleaners” as well as their legacy carried on by the likes of Van Gogh, as visible in his “Bedroom in Arles.” And of course we’ll check out works by Monet himself, including his famous poppies. Think windmills, lily pads, and ballerinas.

After the museum, step back into time to the 19th century, when Paris was living the Belle Epoque, when cancan dancers kicked high, and when artists enjoyed absinthe in cafés. Explore the cobbled streets stretching between the Moulin Rouge and the Sacré Coeur basilica, considered to be the home of the art movement known as Impressionism. Stunning views across Paris will make it clear why artists chose to live here, in one of the city’s most inspirational districts.

Belene was AMAZING!! She was so knowledgeable about everything!! She was delightful in her presentation about the art and the artists. She asked questions of us and made the tour interactive and pushed us to understand our views about art and history. When we come back to Paris we will contact her!! The walk up the windy streets of Montmartre allowed us to see, hear and feel the nuances of the neighborhood that the artists had lived in. I can not begin to praise enough how delightful this tour was!!!

I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants a personal tour privately, complete with history along the way. I highly recommend Kristina. She was extremely knowledgeable about the impressionists and other eras of art, as well as history of Paris. I would take a tour with her anytime.

We did a full-day tour of the Montmartre and the Orsay Museum with Babylon Tours. We met our guide at the metro stop in front of the Moulon Rouge and then ambled through back alleys to the top of the hill stopping at sites of importance to the history of artists in the area. At the top of the hill, we toured Sacre Cour and then walked back down. After lunch, we took a taxi to the Orsay for 2 1/2 additional hours of in depth art history and interpretation. It was easily the best museum experience I've ever had.

We ve done the tour with Belen which was great! We first went to Montmartre, she took us up to Sacre Coeur through an unusual way, not so touristic where she explained us all the history of the neighborhood and told us stories about the artists of the time. During the afternoon we went to D'Orsay museum where she was outstanding! She not only showed and explained the artworks but also gave us a historic background and teached us how to differentiate the different art movements and how they were related. I would definitely recommend the tour and mainly Belen!! Thank you!!!

We had a fabulous time in Paris because of Babylon! Sam and Arnaud were wonderful and it helped so much that they were from the US. They provided context, helped answer questions and were frankly invaluable! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour plus Louvre and the Montmarte and Orsay tours. Without them we would have been lost and in fact once Arnaud left we did get lost in the Louvre. Fabulous experience and Thank you Babylon!

This 5-hour complete guided tour of Montmartre, Notre Dame Basilica, and Orsay Museum, with Melissa, was a great introduction to my first day in Paris. Melissa related the history and background of the Moulin Rouge, and the Montmartre area, providing a great insight into the key places of interest we would see along our walk in Montmartre. There was a good amount of uphill walking, but manageable, with small breaks, and must-have good walking shoes. I was appreciative of Melissa's knowledge of the area, and best streets to take, to see main sights and to avoid crowds, as well as make the uphill walk less arduous. Melissa was kind enough to take photos since I was a solo traveller, and she answered all my questions and was very flexible,(making a quick stop for me, to the Fragonard perfumery) at the end of our Montmartre tour. We continued to the Orsay Museum and again, Melissa provided great insight into the history of the museum, the collections, and focused on the impressionist paintings, since that was my main interest at Orsay, and I was lucky enough to be the only one taking the tour on that day. Babylon Tours was very professional from the time I booked on line (providing prompt answers to any questions prior to booking) - to providing email reminders of my upcoming tour, as well as follow-up after the Tour. I was informed, prior to booking, that even if I was the only one on the tour, it would still go ahead. This was greatly appreciated for planning purposes. In this regard, Babylon Tours appears to be very reliable. If you booked it, you can have confidence that you will have the tour, even if you are the only one on the tour. I was very impressed with Melissa's expertise and considerate approach, adjusting to my key interests along the way. In choosing Babylon, I made the best use of my time, and thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted greatly from the expertise of a guided visit to Montmartre and Orsay. Melissa was very knowledgeable, personable, flexible and I had a most enjoyable first day in Paris. Thank You.

We met our guide, Laura close to the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre at 10am. There were four of us plus Laura. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for Paris, it's history and it's art, particularly the impressionists was excellent. (She is Australian and has lived in Paris 3 years and spoke fluent French) We spent the morning walking around various places of artistic interest away from the usual tourist traps and hoards of people. We chose the private tour to avoid large groups and it paid off enormously so it was well worth the extra cost. Laura chose a local French bistro for lunch which was excellent! We then went by taxi to the Musee d'Orsay which is former magnificent railway station on the river side. You could quite easily spend a day here - the art is displayed beautifully - the Skip the line entrance gave us extra time inside and Laura chose specific areas to show us to enable a clear and informative tour of the great impressionists with lots of interesting facts. Our tour ended there at around 5pm to allow us extra time to view the Van Gough exhibition which is superb. Laura was a excellent guide, friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable - I would highly recommend this tour and particularly Laura!

If you can do it, I highly recommend this tour. My tour guide, Belen was amazing and I spent a wonderful day in Paris on this tour. She gave me a great tour of Montmartre and Basilica Sacre Coeur that was rich with history. After lunch, we toured the Musee d'Orsay and while she explained the different styles of painting associated with the Impressionist genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our guide, Harriet, was fabulous. What a wonderful and informative tour. I highly recommend this tour as it provides behind the scenes insight into the Montmartre impressionist community and then ties it to the artwork at the d'Orsay.

What a GREAT tour and GREAT tour guide!!!! We lucked out with tour guide Belen Roncoroni. She was timely, informative and really customized this tour as she got to know us. A wonderful walk in the Montmartre area, shopping for art work with Belen's assistance as she is also an artist and a wonderful picnic lunch on the Seine River taking in all of the sites in the middle of it all. Then we moved on to the Musee where Belen really displayed her knowledge and love for art. We can not say enough about this Guide or tour. Getting to know Paris with this walking tour was the best!!!!

  • William B William B

Our personal guide was funny and very knowledgeable. It was great to be able to tailor the tour to our liking and to not have to fight for position in a group to ask questions and hear the answers.

  • Barbara T Barbara T

lovely stroll thru Montmartre--thought we would hear more about individual artists but really did not learn anything new. But our guide was knowledgable and the trip thru the Musee d'Orsay was delightful. Montmarte has changed over the years--seemed like all the paintings were of the Eiffel tower and I missed all the wonderful landscapes and window boxes and shutter paintings that used to be there. Found a couple but not nearly the selection found in previous years.

This tour was the highlight of our trip. We had an incredible tour guide. Her knowledge was amazing!!
